Years ago, I had a roommate who would hum all the time. It drove me crazy! This guy was ridiculously unhealthy “on paper.” He was a big smoker, never exercised, drank A LOT and ate like shit. Yet he’d kick my ass in a 10 mile hike right off the couch (even though I was an exercise maniac), was always happy and never really had any health challenges.

Little did both of us know, his constant annoying habit of humming was actually helping his mind stay happy and his body stay “healthy”. Now, I’m not saying that if you hum and live a lifestyle like his everything will be A-OK because eventually it will catch up with you regardless. But knowing what I know now, I believe his humming was actually helping him on some level.

Have you ever noticed how much better you feel after humming a song? When we hum, our bodies are flooded with endorphins and oxytocin—the hormones that make us feel good. The low frequency vibrations produced by humming can influence our body’s energetic systems, aiding in the healing process. This practice is called humming breath and it has been used for centuries by various cultures as a way to promote health and wellbeing. Let’s dive deeper into this a little more.

What the heck is the Humming Breath?

Humming breath is a simple breathing exercise that involves inhaling deeply while making a humming sound (like “mmmm”). The vibration created by your vocal cords sends calming signals throughout your body, helping to relax your mind and reduce stress levels. Additionally, the low frequency vibrations created by humming can balance out your body’s energetic systems, allowing for greater clarity and focus. Not only does it provide physical benefits, but it also encourages emotional release and spiritual connection.
